Mole habits
MOLE HABITS:
Moles are active throughout the day and prefer moist, cool soil that helps them regulate their temperature. Food is the primary motivator for tunneling in your yard so controlling their food sources is one of the most effective ways to control the mole population in your yard. Their favorite foods are grubs, mole crickets, beetles, earthworms, larvae, soil insects and other small invertebrates. Some moles can eat 100 percent of their body weight in insects per day. So if your lawn is not abundant with their food sources they will leave, eventually.
But let's look at the benefits of having moles in your yard, just for a minute. They help to aerate the soil and distribute nutrients. They help control insect populations in your lawn. They feed on insects that harm your grass and plants. They are an indicator of a healthy yard. Unfortunately, because tunnels are unsightly, most people understandably would rather they are not present.
WATER LESS
Moles love the soft, damp soil. They know they will find food where it is damp and cool. Allowing your lawn to dry out between waterings will deter moles somewhat. Watering twice a week in summer, or three times a week if necessary, and allowing the soil to dry out between watering is not only good for the lawn, but will also help to minimize moles hunting in your yard.
CONTROL FOODS & USE REPELLANTS:
There are a myriad of poisons and some repellants on the market. I have written another blog specifically about the arsenal choices, and I recommend using several different ways to deter moles, because nothing seems to last more than 4 weeks, until you have successfully managed to deter them from tunneling. If you become successful at ridding your yard of moles, congratulate yourself on a job well done.
HIRE A TRAPPER:
I am not recommending this option, because it is costly and paying for monthly service may never end. However, as a part of your arsenal, it might be a good choice for you.
I suggest you also read my blog regarding your mole arsenal so you can arm yourself against moles making your yard a regular hunting ground.
